If you’re planning an adventure along the Pamir Highway (M41)—one of the highest and most remote roads in the world—you’ll need to ensure you have the correct permits and registrations in place.
GBAO Permit – Required to enter the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO)
OVIR Registration – Mandatory if staying in Tajikistan for more than 10 working days (excluding weekends & holidays)
This guide explains how to obtain these permits, costs, processing times, and essential travel tips to avoid any issues on your journey.
The GBAO (Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region) Permit is a special travel authorization required for visiting Tajikistan’s eastern region, which includes:
Khorog – The capital of GBAO and gateway to the Pamirs
Murghab – The highest town in Tajikistan (3,650m)
Karakul Lake – A breathtaking alpine lake near the Kyrgyz border
Wakhan Corridor – A remote valley with ancient fortresses and hot springs
Military Checkpoints:
Throughout the Pamir Highway, several military checkpoints will check your GBAO permit. Without it, you will be turned back.
If your nationality requires a visa, the easiest way to get the GBAO permit is by applying for it together with your Tajikistan e-visa.
✔ Print a hard copy of your e-visa and GBAO permit.
✔ Ensure that your GBAO permit is stamped on your e-visa before traveling.
If you didn’t apply online, you can get the permit separately in Dushanbe at the OVIR office (Tajikistan’s Immigration Department).
Location: OVIR Office, Mirzo Tursunzoda Street, Dushanbe
Processing Time: Usually 1 day (sometimes same-day)
Documents Required: Passport + Copy of Your Tajikistan Visa
Tip: Arrive early in the morning to avoid long wait times.
Avoid the hassle of bureaucracy, paperwork, and long waiting times—we can get your GBAO permit in advance!
No need to visit OVIR – We handle the entire process for you.
Saves you an entire day – No wasted time on documentation.
Fast & reliable – Have your permit ready before your trip starts.

OVIR (Office of Visas and Registration) registration is required for foreign travelers staying in Tajikistan for more than 10 working days (excluding weekends and public holidays).
Who Must Register?
If you stay in Tajikistan for more than 10 working days (typically 14+ calendar days including weekends and holidays).
If you are staying in homestays or private accommodations, you are responsible for arranging your own registration.
How to Register?
Hotels & Hostels: Ask your accommodation to assist with registration. Many hotels and hostels can help with the process but will not do it automatically. Always confirm with the front desk upon check-in.
Self-Registration at OVIR: If your accommodation cannot assist, you must go to an OVIR office yourself.
Who Does NOT Need to Register?
If you are staying in Tajikistan for 10 working days or fewer (excluding weekends & public holidays).
If your accommodation does not handle registration, you must visit an OVIR office to register yourself.
Locations:
Dushanbe: OVIR Office, Mirzo Tursunzoda Street
Khorog: OVIR Office, GBAO Regional Center
Processing Time: Usually same-day, sometimes up to 3 days
Cost: ~$20-$25 USD
Documents Needed:
Passport
Tajikistan Visa Copy
GBAO Permit (if applicable)
Address of your accommodation
Tip: If you’re traveling for more than 10 working days in Tajikistan, get OVIR registration in Dushanbe before heading to the Pamirs.
Some areas in GBAO require additional permits:
Zorkul Lake Permit: Issued by the Border Guard Office in Khorog
Sarez Lake Permit: Issued by the Committee for Emergency Situations in Dushanbe
Tip: These permits take time to process, so apply in advance!
Always carry printed copies of your GBAO permit & OVIR registration.
Be polite at military checkpoints—officers will check your passport and documents.
Have cash ready—some offices only accept cash for permits & registration fees.
